Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy

What is Neurodivergent / Neurodiversity (ND) Affirming Care?

ND Affirming Care is an approach to therapy and counseling that affirms the diverse neuro identities and expressions of neurodivergent minds. It recognizes that our neurotypes are integral to who we are and our experience of the world. Affirmative care is rooted in respect, empathy, and validation of an individual's experience.

When you read about neurodivergent (ND) affirming care, you may notice a lot of similar principles to those described in the transgender affirmative care practices section of our website. There is a good reason for this; many of the theoretical principles used in ND affirming care, originated from LGBT+ liberation movements!

Neurodivergent identities have experienced marginalization and “othering” that is reminiscent of the historical targeting of LGBT+ people. There are countless historical harms done to queer communities from within the medical community and mental health practice. At Authentically You Counseling, we are dedicated to changing that narrative.

Principles of behaviorism and conversion therapy that have harmed LGBT+ people, are also the foundation of historical approaches to neurodivergent care. The pioneers in neuro affirming care are taking cues from revolutionaries in LGBT+ care, while also centering lived experience and neurodivergent voices.

At Authentically You Counseling, we recognize that each person's identity journey is unique. Whether you are exploring your neuro-identity, or seeking support for mental health concerns through a neurodivergent-affirming lens, our compassionate therapists are here to support you. We respect your self-identified neurotype and aim to empower you to live authentically.
