How Self-Compassion Effects the Nervous System

Updated: Aug 3, 2025

self-compassion

Self-compassion is more than just being kind to yourself. It is a powerful way to support your mental health and your nervous system. At Authentically You Counseling, we often talk with clients about how slowing down, being gentle with yourself, and practicing self-compassion can reduce stress and bring a sense of emotional balance. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, burnout, or just feeling overwhelmed, learning to be kinder to yourself can make a big difference.

When we are stressed or scared, the body reacts through the nervous system. The fight, flight, or freeze response kicks in, and suddenly we feel tense, irritable, or shut down. This is the body’s natural way of trying to protect us. But if we stay in that high-alert state for too long, it takes a toll on our mental and physical health. Self-compassion helps tell the nervous system that it is safe to relax.

Research shows that when we offer ourselves compassion, it activates the calming part of the nervous system called the parasympathetic system. This can slow your heart rate, ease muscle tension, and help your body feel more at ease. It can also shift how you think and feel. Instead of beating yourself up or feeling stuck in shame, self-compassion helps you feel more supported and more connected to others.

In therapy, we help you learn what self-compassion looks like for you. It might mean changing your self-talk, slowing down when you need rest, or being more patient with your emotions. These simple shifts can help reduce anxiety, build resilience, and bring more peace into your daily life.

At Authentically You Counseling, we offer in-person therapy in Concord and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and virtual sessions across the state. Whether you are new to counseling or looking for support during a difficult time, we are here to help you build a stronger connection with yourself and your nervous system.
